our statement

our statement

The 2018 Farm Bill opened up the hemp industry to millions of Americans who now enjoy the wellness benefits of CBD and THC. Now, lawmakers and prohibitionists want to take those products away from us. That ain’t right. If we want to keep our freedom to choose natural wellness, we’ve got to speak up.

Official Statement

Sen. Mitch McConnell filed an amendment to the Senate agriculture appropriations bill that would roll back ten years of progress and destroy the hemp industry as we know it. We agree with Sen. McConnell that the current state of the hemp market falls short of the promise made by the 2018 farm bill, but we disagree with his remedy.

The root cause of this problem is a lack of federal oversight that has led to an unregulated market, which allows synthetic products that put kids at risk. We can solve this problem without banning all hemp products. We echo Sen. Rand Paul's warning that shutting down the hemp industry is a "terrible idea," and we thank Sen. Jeff Merkley for defending the hemp industry and negotiating a one-year reprieve, should this bill go into effect as passed in Thursday's committee markup.

But Thursday's vote is not the final word. It's only the beginning of a process that will take months to finalize. That gives us time to make our voices heard with members of Congress. With good regulations, we can protect consumers, prevent underage access, and preserve the future for American farmers.

Cornbread Hemp won't rest until we get this right.
