Why the name "Cornbread"?
The name Cornbread comes from Kentucky’s Cornbread Mafia, the largest domestic cannabis syndicate in U.S. history—a story that hits close to home for co-founders Jim Higdon and Eric Zipperle. Both grew up in the same Kentucky town where it all went down, and Jim’s fascination with the story eventually led him to write The Cornbread Mafia, a national bestseller. When the 2018 Farm Bill opened the door to legal hemp, Eric’s own experience finding relief from a brain injury through CBD gave the cousins a mission to build a company around the plant. The company name became obvious: Cornbread Hemp.

A Louisville native with a degree in accounting and MBA from Bellarmine University, Eric's path to hemp advocacy is deeply personal. After suffering a traumatic brain injury playing high school basketball, chronic migraines led him to discover cannabis as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical solutions.
Under his leadership, Cornbread Hemp has become a national leader in natural wellness products, earning recognition as one of the fastest-growing hemp brands in America by Inc 5000. From product development to legislative advocacy, Eric remains focused on raising the standard for natural wellness in the U.S.

A Lebanon, Kentucky native with degrees from Centre College, Brown University, and Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism, Jim wrote the 2012 bestseller The Cornbread Mafia, which launched his journalism career and deepened his understanding of hemp cultivation in the Bluegrass State. He covered Kentucky for the Washington Post and cannabis policy for POLITICO before co-founding Cornbread Hemp with his cousin Eric in 2019.
As Chief Communications Officer and Vice President for Marketing and Outreach on the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, Jim shapes federal and state cannabis policy, educates consumers, and builds legislative relationships to keep hemp accessible, legal, and safe for all Americans.
