These non-alcoholic beverages—also known as functional beverages—are formulated with plant-derived and cognitive-support compounds designed to go beyond flavor or hydration by imparting potential mood or cognitive benefits. For people interested in cutting back or eliminating alcohol from their routine, they offer an appealing alternative.
As both an exercise physiologist and someone who studies this space closely, I’ll walk you through what’s actually happening in your body when you drink one, what the science does and doesn’t support, and why so many people are making the swap.
What Are Nootropic and Botanical Beverages, Exactly?
Let’s start with the terms themselves.
“Botanical” simply means an ingredient derived from a plant. “Nootropic” is a broader term used for compounds intended to support aspects of cognition, attention, alertness, or mental performance.
Here’s my caution, though: “nootropic” is used very loosely in consumer products. Calling something a nootropic doesn’t automatically mean it’s been clinically proven to improve cognition. The evidence varies enormously from ingredient to ingredient.
What makes this category genuinely interesting is that beverage makers are now formulating drinks around a desired experience—relaxation, focus, social ease—without using alcohol to create it.
More people are questioning whether they actually want the physiological consequences of alcohol just to enjoy the ritual of having a drink. And that distinction matters—someone might love holding a cocktail at a social event or marking the transition from work to relaxation, without wanting impaired judgment, disrupted sleep, a hangover, or the long-term health risks that come with alcohol.
This shift shows up in the data, not just anecdotally: alcohol consumption among American adults recently hit the lowest level Gallup has recorded, while the no- and low-alcohol functional beverage category keeps growing. What I’m seeing is a lot of moderation—people drinking alcohol sometimes, and reaching for a functional non-alcoholic beverage other times.

Popular Botanical Ingredients: What the Science Actually Says
Certain botanical compounds appear to influence the neural systems involved in arousal and relaxation, without producing the broad central nervous system impairment that comes with alcohol.
L-Theanine: The Ingredient With the Strongest Evidence
L-theanine, for example, has been studied for its effects on attention, stress responsiveness, and patterns of brain activity associated with relaxed attention. It’s an amino acid naturally found in tea, particularly green tea. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and appears to influence several aspects of neural activity, though its full mechanism in humans is still being studied. It’s drawn interest because it seems to influence attention and stress without acting like a conventional sedative. Some studies have even observed changes in alpha-frequency brain activity, which is associated with a relaxed but awake state.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis offers a more nuanced picture than much of the marketing around L-theanine suggests (1). Across 31 randomized trials involving 1,168 participants, the clearest finding was improved choice reaction time and attentional processing after a single 200mg dose. Effects on acute stress were more modest, and the evidence for reducing anxiety was inconsistent.
That’s why I prefer the phrase “focused calm” over calling L-theanine an anti-anxiety ingredient. It captures the idea that you can stay cognitively engaged without sedation.
Lemon Balm: Traditional Use Meets Emerging Science
Lemon balm has a long history of traditional use for relaxation. Compounds within it, including rosmarinic acid, have been studied for effects on neurotransmitter systems, including GABA-related signaling (2). There are human studies suggesting effects on anxiety and mood, but the literature is relatively small. I wouldn’t put it on par with an approved medication.
Passionflower: A Long History, Growing Clinical Support
Passionflower has a similar story. GABAergic mechanisms are one of the leading proposed explanations for its calming effects. A systematic review of clinical trials found that most studies reported some reduction in anxiety, but only nine trials were eligible; they used different preparations and outcome measures, with durations ranging from a single day to about a month (3).
My characterization of both lemon balm and passionflower: promising, but not definitive. These aren’t just folklore, but the science isn’t strong enough to call them treatments for anxiety or insomnia.
Do These Three Ingredients Work Better Together?
There’s a reasonable theoretical case for combining them, since they may support relaxation and attention through partially overlapping but distinct mechanisms. But “synergy” is a much stronger scientific claim than that. To demonstrate synergy, you’d want a controlled study comparing each ingredient alone, various combinations, and the full formulation. To my knowledge, that specific evidence doesn’t exist yet for this combination.
So I’d call these ingredients complementary, not proven-synergistic. Each has its own evidence base, and combining them is biologically plausible—but one plus one plus one doesn’t automatically equal an amplified effect.
How Your Body Processes Functional Beverages vs. Alcohol
The difference is substantial. Ethanol is a psychoactive drug—rapidly absorbed, distributed through the body’s water compartments, and capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier to alter multiple neurotransmitter systems and produce dose-dependent impairment. Your liver then has to metabolize it, producing acetaldehyde before eventually converting it to acetate.
The functional ingredients in a botanical beverage are completely different molecules, with their own absorption and metabolism. They don’t reproduce ethanol’s effects minus the alcohol—because removing ethanol removes the substance responsible for intoxication itself. You’re not creating impairment and then eliminating its consequences; you’re starting from an entirely different physiological proposition.
In other words, this combination of ingredients (or other nootropic and botanical ingredients) doesn’t create an alcohol-like pharmacologic buzz—we simply don’t have convincing evidence for that. Instead, the calming effects people tend to notice with nootropic beverages are likely a combination of subtle physiological effects and behavioral context. You still have a cold, flavorful drink in your hand. You still show up for happy hour or the social ritual around it. Your brain still registers that moment as “the workday is over, it’s time to relax.” That expectancy is real and meaningful, even without intoxication.
The ritual concept deserves more credit than it usually gets. Humans respond strongly to environmental and behavioral cues. Sitting down at the end of the day, opening a drink, and socializing can itself signal that it's time to disengage from work—and that ritual doesn’t have to disappear just because the ethanol does.
The Real Health Benefits of Swapping Alcohol for a Functional Beverage
The biggest, most evidence-based advantage of swapping alcohol for a nootropic or botanical beverage is the simplest one: you’re consuming less alcohol. That’s not a trivial benefit. Alcohol exposure is associated with increased risk of several cancers, liver disease, hypertension, and other adverse outcomes, and current public-health guidance increasingly emphasizes that less is better than more.
A few other real benefits worth naming:
- Sleep quality. Alcohol can make you feel drowsy initially, but sedation isn’t the same thing as healthy sleep. Alcohol can disrupt normal sleep architecture and fragment sleep later in the night.
- No hangover. Removing ethanol removes the alcohol-induced hangover entirely.
- Fewer calories from alcohol. The fair comparison isn't “zero calories”—it’s that you avoid the calories contributed by ethanol, which can make these beverages considerably lighter than many cocktails.
- Preserved cognitive and motor function. Without the intoxicating agent, you aren’t intentionally compromising reaction time, judgment, coordination, or executive function just to relax socially.
Skeptical about Functional Beverages?
If you’re skeptical about what nootropic and botanical beverages might really offer, keep in mind that “plant-derived” does not mean pharmacologically inactive. Some of the most potent substances humans consume or use medicinally originated in plants. The appropriate question isn’t whether something comes from a plant. The question is whether the specific compound, at the specific dose being consumed, produces a measurable biological effect in humans.
Finding that 200mg of an ingredient produces an effect in a clinical trial does not demonstrate that a beverage containing an undisclosed or substantially smaller quantity will reproduce that effect.
So my response to the skeptic would be: don’t dismiss botanical ingredients simply because they’re botanical, but don’t believe exaggerated claims simply because a product contains them either. Look at the ingredient, dose, human evidence, and formulation quality.
As for what to actually expect: you might feel more relaxed or notice a calmer state, but don't expect the dramatic perceptual shift of alcohol intoxication. That's actually the point. You can keep the ritual—pouring a drink, sitting with friends, having something a little more sophisticated than water or soda—without pursuing intoxication.
Individual variability matters, too. One person may notice a botanical ingredient clearly; another may perceive very little. And I want to be clear: these beverages aren't treatments for anxiety, insomnia, depression, or any other medical condition. Who Should Be Cautious
“Natural” should never be interpreted as “universally safe.” Botanicals’ ability to produce biological effects is the reason people consume them in the first place, and anything biologically active deserves an appropriate level of respect.
A few groups that should take extra care:
- Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Passionflower specifically isn't recommended during pregnancy due to concern it may stimulate uterine contractions, and safety data during breastfeeding are inadequate.
- Those taking CNS-affecting medications. If you’re taking sedatives or other drowsiness-causing medications, talk to your healthcare provider before adding concentrated botanical products. Combining multiple calming substances could theoretically have additive effects.
- Those managing complex medical situations. People on multiple prescriptions, preparing for surgery, or managing significant liver or kidney disease should discuss botanical supplements with their provider.
- Those with thyroid conditions. Lemon balm deserves some caution here, since laboratory and preclinical work has raised questions about possible effects on thyroid signaling, though clinical significance remains uncertain.
And because individual response varies, it’s wise to see how a new botanical beverage affects you before doing anything that requires full alertness.
Tips for Choosing a Functional Beverage
Transparency is the single biggest thing I look for in a reputable product. A few specifics to look for:
- Exact amounts of each active ingredient, not just a “proprietary botanical blend,” which makes it much harder to compare against the actual research
- Clearly identified botanical species, not vague terms like “herbal blend”
- Standardized extracts, where standardization is relevant
- Transparent serving sizes
- Reasonable added sugar
- Manufacturing and quality-control information, including independent testing for identity, potency, and contaminants when available
- Measured claims—language about what an ingredient may support, rather than promises to cure anxiety or transform your brain chemistry
One of the strongest signals of a scientifically responsible brand is restraint. A company that tells you what an ingredient might support, not what it will guarantee, has earned more of my confidence.
The Bottom Line
What interests me most about this category is the shift in how we think about social drinking. For a long time, the beverage and the drug felt inseparable. If you wanted the cocktail ritual, you drank ethanol, and if you didn’t want alcohol, your options were often water, soda, or something that felt like a consolation prize.
Functional non-alcoholic beverages challenge that assumption. They ask whether we can keep the flavor, the ritual, the social connection, and the psychological transition of having a drink, while removing the part that causes intoxication.
We don’t need to exaggerate the botanicals to make that case. L-theanine, lemon balm, and passionflower each have interesting pharmacology and varying levels of human evidence, and continued research is warranted. But even before science pins down exactly how much each ingredient contributes to the subjective experience, swapping a cocktail for a well-formulated non-alcoholic beverage does something very concrete: it reduces ethanol exposure while letting you stay part of the social ritual.
