Organic CBD Skin Care

Posted by Jim Higdon on Feb 4th 2021

As of early 2021, Cornbread Hemp's entire topical CBD product line is USDA certified organic. We are the only CBD brand to offer a full line of USDA organic full spectrum CBD skin care products made from flower-only extraction. That’s a big deal! Organic CBD skin care products are better for you and better for the environment. That’s why we take the extra steps necessary to bring these premium products to you.

What Goes Into the Best CBD Skin Care?

How do you know if you have the best CBD skincare product? It's important to read the labels and do a little research before purchasing any CBD skincare products. Is the product that you’re considering subject to third-party testing? Can you find the lab results easily? All of Cornbread Hemp’s products are made in small batches and each batch is subjected to third-party lab testing. Those results are available on our website, and you can access those results using a QR code on all of our products.

What criteria to use for picking a topical CBD product? Do the test results match the claims made by the CBD company? Does the ingredients list include multisyllabic words that you can’t identify, let alone pronounce? Are the ingredients all natural?

All natural is nice, but is it USDA certified organic? Becoming a USDA certified organic product is neither cheap nor easy. Every ingredient included in the product must be itself eligible for the USDA organic seal.

These are the basic steps for a CBD product to become certified organic by the USDA:

  1. Organic farming methods
  2. Organic extraction method
  3. Other organic ingredients
  4. Third-party certifying agent
  5. Annual review and inspection process1

Every ingredient in Cornbread Hemp’s new topical CBD skincare line is USDA certified organic. And with our lotions and CBD balm, that ingredient list is long. There’s a lot of work and a lot of care put into making our products organic for you.

What Kind of CBD is in Your CBD Skin Care Products?

What is CBD? CBD is short for cannabidiol. It a chemical compound found exclusively in cannabis hemp plants. There are over a hundred different compounds found in cannabis, called "cannabinoids." Popular cannabinoids other than CBD are tetrahydrocannabinol THC, cannabinol CBN, and Cannabigerol CBG.

CBD may help people achieve wellness. Similar to how different supplements are recommended for individual needs, different applications of CBD may produce different outcomes. For example, using a topical CBD product directly on an uncomfortable area may prove to be more effective than taking CBD oil sublingually under the tongue.2

Some brands make their CBD skin care products with THC-free broad spectrum CBD extract, but not Cornbread Hemp. We agree with science that the whole spectrum of hemp plant compounds are needed to properly bind with the cannabinoid receptors in your endocannabinoid system, allowing you to get the full benefits of CBD oil products.

Other companies that utilize "whole plant" full spectrum CBD oil production make their extract with stems, stalks, and leaves along with flower. This is not good enough for Cornbread Hemp. The CBD concentration is very low in the non-flowering parts of the plant, and using them for extract negatively affects the overall potency of the final product.

We use a full spectrum hemp CBD extract made from the hemp flower only —no leaves, stems or seeds. Our organic CBD balm uses the same first-pass extract as we use in our Whole Flower CBD Oil, and our organic CBD lotions use the same distilled extract that we use in our Distilled CBD Oil.

Organic Skin Care Products

Why use high quality organic skin care products when the stuff you can buy at the drug store is much cheaper? Cherie Di Boscio, editor of Eluxe Magazine, shares some facts and figures that are particularly damning of the mass-produced skin care and beauty products industry:

“Nearly 20 percent of personal-care products contain at least one chemical linked to cancer, and yet the FDA has not regulated beauty ingredients since 1938. This, however, is evolving as consumers change their lifestyle and consumption habits. A 2004 study found parabens in 18 out of 20 samples of human breast tissue. Parabens are in almost 100 percent of drugstore skin care products and cosmetics. Finally, only about 10 percent of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data.”3

The toxins found in non-organic skincare products are absorbed through your skin cells. Some of them cannot be broken down, so they accumulate in your system. When we wash our face and bodies, the unabsorbed toxins are washed down the sink or shower and then end up in our waterways.

Many of us have opted for a clean-eating lifestyle. Why not also adopt clean skin care as a lifestyle choice? What is clean skin care? It’s the use of skin care and cosmetic products that do not contain any toxic ingredients. Clean skincare prioritizes human and environmental health and restricts ingredients that are harmful to that. Most clean skin care products are made with essential oils and plant material.

What Ingredients are in our Organic CBD Skin Care Products?

Below is the ingredient list for the newly reformulated CBD lotions. As you can see, we take great care in only using organic, natural ingredients and essential oils that are recognizable to regular consumers. It's important to us that our customers can trust our CBD skincare products and the natural ingredients we use to make them.

Organic sugarcane alcohol, Organic jojoba oil, Organic glycerin, Organic beeswax, Organic lecithin (soy), Organic carnauba wax, Organic argan oil, Organic safflower oil, Organic vitamin E, Organic hemp extract, Organic olive leaf oil, Organic lemongrass oil, Organic rosemary oil.

More about some of these ingredients:

Jojoba oil: One of the more popular oils used in cosmetics and hair products to promote skin and hair health. Likely you’ve heard the word mentioned in advertisements before, pronounced “hohoba.” Jojoba oil is also known as jojoba wax and comes from the plant’s seeds.4

Lecithin: a fat that is essential in the cells of the body. It can be found in many foods, including soybeans and egg yolks.5

Carnauba wax: a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to natural waxes. You’re as likely to find carnauba wax as a coating on your M&Ms as you are to find it as part of the waterproof sealant on the hull of your friend’s boat. Sourced from Brazil, you’ll find organic carnauba wax in all of Cornbread Hemp’s USDA Organic topical CBD products, including the CBD Balm and the lotions.6

Argan oil: a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree. It’s native to Morocco, where people dip their bread into the oil and use it on couscous. But elsewhere, its primary use is in cosmetics, such as face creams and as an ingredient in lip gloss, shampoo, moisturizers, and soaps.7

Rosemary oil: best known as a culinary seasoning. Despite its name, it is not a true oil as it does not contain fat. It is a highly aromatic herb with several potential medical uses.8

Additionally, our CBD Lotion + Menthol has a few additional organic ingredients to help provide a tingling sensation and a deeper level of comfort. Those ingredients include: Organic peppermint oil, Organic menthol, and Organic tea tree oil.

Peppermint: one of the most popular scents and flavors in the world. The main chemical components of peppermint oil from the leaves of the peppermint plant are menthol and menthone, both of which create a cooling effect when applied topically to the skin in a body lotion or cream.9

Menthol: an organic compound obtained from the oils of corn mint, peppermint, or other mints. It is widely used in cough drops and lozenges. It’s cooling effects can also be felt when applied topically.10

Tea tree oil: also known as melaleuca oil, an essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous smell derived from the tea tree, native to Australia. It is typically used as a topical preparation in many skin and hair care products.11
