In the late 1800s and early 1900s, big-name American pharmaceutical companies like Eli Lilly, Bristol-Meyers and Parke-Davis began to sell tinctures and extracted oils of cannabis to combat anxiety and other ailments. After an extensive media smear campaign, cannabis was dropped from the U.S. Pharmacopeia in the 1940’s and the government began to levy legal penalties for its possession. These penalties increased in severity through the decades and still exist today.

In 1996, California passed the Compassionate Use Act to become the first state to allow the legal medical marijuana plant. Today, at least 33 states have followed suit by passing state laws allowing medical marijuana to be prescribed for anxiety and other maladies. The only difference between hemp and marijuana is the THC content.

Some states like Kentucky and Indiana only allow hemp-derived CBD cannabidiol oil to be sold. Kentucky also does not allow hemp flower to be sold, although many states do allow it.

Americans & Anxiety Issues

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in America, affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1 percent of the population. Only 36.9 percent of those suffering an anxiety disorder will receive treatment.3

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, in a study of Americans and anxiety issues, researchers found that “people with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders.”4

What is CBD Oil?

The question "What is CBD oil?" has a lot of different components. To start with, cannabis is a complex plant, and CBD oil comes from a variety of cannabis known as hemp. Secondly, there are lots of questions about the sourcing of hemp for CBD oil, and how hemp derived CBD products are made.

What does CBD stand for?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, the second most prevalent cannabinoid in cannabis, after THC. The hemp plant, a variety of cannabis, is the source of CBD for nearly all the CBD oils available for purchase in the United States. The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp as a cannabis plant with a THC level not above 0.3 percent. This change in definition allowed cannabidiol CBD products made from hemp to be considered legal under federal law and in at least 47 states.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD oil comes from the hemp plant, which was historically called "industrial hemp" and was used to make rope, textiles, paper, and construction materials. Hemp is a sturdy, fast-growing plant, and it is one of the first plants to be spun into fibers for textiles.

Hemp is grown in around 30 countries, and was finally made legal to grow in the U.S. in 2018. The hemp grown in America today is not just for fiber and seeds; it is also used to make cannabinoids like CBD, as long as the THC level remains below 0.3 percent. In America, the top hemp-growing states are Colorado, Oregon, and Kentucky.

How is CBD oil made?

There are several different methods by which CBD can be extracted from hemp to make CBD oil, most involving either a solvent or pressurized CO2 extraction method. CBD oils come from the resin in hemp flowers, which are cured, dried and then heated.

How Does CBD Work

Since hemp CBD containing less than 0.3 percent THC was federally legalized, many clinical trials with hemp have been performed to understand how CBD and THC works in the human body. And while there is still much to discover, researchers think they have a general idea.

There is a network of cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body called the endocannabinoid system. It is believed that this system helps the body maintain balance, or homeostasis. Compounds found in the cannabis plant have been shown to supplement the endocannabinoid system so it can work at optimum levels. This leads researchers to think that CBD may help the body better manage how it handles aches & pains, and potentially help with anxiety issues.  

Full Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum

The "entourage effect" is the effect of all the cannabinoids working together on the endocannabinoid system at once. This effect makes the system work better, thereby helping your body better. Full spectrum hemp extract containing all of the cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, can induce the entourage effect.

Broad spectrum hemp products have had the THC component removed. And CBD isolates have been stripped of everything except the single CBD compound. Some people buy broad spectrum or isolate pure CBD products thinking they may pass a drug test with them, or that full spectrum CBD will get them high. They are wrong on both counts.

Many drug tests can't tell the difference between CBD and THC, meaning that even if you were taking broad spectrum CBD or isolates, you may still fail a drug test. And the small amounts of THC found in full spectrum CBD won't get you high. In fact, large amounts of CBD will not allow the smaller amounts of THC to bind to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain, so there are no intoxicating effects at all.

In short, your body needs the complete cannabinoid content to be able to have the best results, and only full spectrum CBD oil has all the cannabis components required. CBD Side Effects

CBD is generally regarded as safe and doesn't tend to cause side effects in most people. Side effects may occur if the CBD doses are too high. A common side effect reported from taking too much CBD is upset stomach leading to diarrhea. This can be avoided if you start low in dose and slowly build your way up.

Negative side effects can also occur if you are using low quality products. Due to lack of regulations, there are CBD oil brands out there selling fake CBD with harmful ingredients that could cause long term side effects.
